WinEdt has been in use for quite a while (30 more years). It was first created in 1993 as an editor for a simple text to use on Windows 3.1. I began the project using an undergraduate version of Borland's Text Editor 1.5 (Delphi's counterpart) as I was working on my Ph.D. thesis (it is easy to get caught up in things you're required to do when "officially" working on a thesis). I was pretty pleased with the outcome from a few months of part-time programming, and it was confirmed that WinEdt was used to typeset my thesis without significant issues. Through the process, I made some improvements and addressed several resurfaced bugs.
In 1995, when I was hit with rough times, I decided WinEdt on CTAN as shareware in hopes hoping dollars from registrations would be enough to pay for the expense of renting. It didn't seem to flow in until WinEdt was registered with just five users in 1995, including my brother, me, and a copy of WinEdt for free that a research center in the US requested. The remainder was a unique experience: A long and winding path...
Contrary to other Windows or platform-independent editors WinEdt was created from scratch (providing specific responses to keyboard and mouse inputs and implementing a text rendering engine that analyzes the text and determines the highlighting attributes). These features allow it to be able to accomplish nearly everything (while maintaining the source files entirely free of any modifications). It also means that WinEdt must offer support for any specific language that applications built on standard controls take over (for instance, bidirectional text is supported as of WinEdt 10). If there is enough interest in a new feature, I'll usually implement it after reviewing feedback and suggestions from interested people. However, the implementation isn't always easy and may take some time. Be patient!
